Susie V. Castillo - Biography

An experienced public administrator, Susie Castillo’s career and family history are deeply rooted in the Miami-Dade County public education system. She was born in Cuba, but has lived in the United States nearly her entire life, as her parents left the island with her and her two older brothers, fleeing Fidel Castro’s communist regime in 1961. A graduate of Hialeah Senior High School, Ms. Castillo is a true product of the Miami-Dade County’s public schools. As a young woman, she followed in her mother’s footsteps, beginning her over 20 year career in public service at the same elementary school where her mother continued her teaching career after arriving in the U.S. Through years of working at various levels of the administration, including the Superintendent’s Office and the office of a School Board Member, Ms. Castillo gained an in-depth understanding of the inner workings of the school district. She learned of the needs of students, teachers, and parents, as well as of the daily challenges of providing the best education possible to all students in Miami-Dade.

Taking her experience from the school district to local government, Ms. Castillo went on to serve as Chief-of-Staff to the first Mayor of the City of Doral for over eight years. During her time there, she served as a liaison between the Mayor’s Office, various constituencies, and schools within the City to make sure students’ needs were being met. Putting her many years of experience in education to work, she was instrumental in developing city-wide education programs in Doral such as a financial literacy program, in conjunction with the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, through which over 150 students each year learn about fiscal responsibility and have an opportunity to tour the Reserve’s facility.

Ms. Castillo serves as the Chair of the School Board’s Facilities Construction Committee, and serves as Vice-Chair of the School Board’s Fiscal Accountability & Government Relations. Ms. Castillo is an active member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials organization, National School Board Association’s Council of Urban Boards of Education, and is the School Board’s representative on the Miami-Dade County League of Cities and the National Hispanic Council of School Board Members.

Ms. Castillo resides in Doral with her son Kevin, who is currently a student at Florida International University, and a graduate of Ronald Reagan/Doral Sr. High School. Her daughter, Andrea, a Miami-Dade College graduate and aspiring educator who passed away at the age of 21, is her inspiration for role as a School Board Member. In her honor, Ms. Castillo founded the Andrea Castillo Foundation, which provides scholarships to students majoring in Education at public colleges and universities in Miami-Dade.

Ms. Castillo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Barry University, and holds the position of Director of Alumni Relations at Florida International University.
